The 40th anniversary of Earth Day, in 2010, was described as a “quiet” affair on Yale’s campus.
“The biggest Yale-connected event today seems to have been down at the New York Stock Exchange,” reported Yale Alumni Magazine, “where the School of Management’s Chief Executive Leadership Institute co-hosted an inaugural Green Summit aimed at erasing the perception that ecology and economy are enemies.”
Thirteen years later, Earth Day 2023 will be anything but quiet.
In fact, Earth Day has seemingly morphed into Earth Month at Yale, with an April calendar that is positively packed with lectures, nature walks, discussions, and exhibits delving into the complex challenges of the climate crisis and where the next generation of leaders may find solutions.
Earth Week itself—April 16 to 22—offers no fewer than 20 separate events. Yale community members can join a native plant walk led by Peabody naturalists, examine what a just energy transition looks like, sustainably unload old electronics at an e-waste collection, celebrate indigenous culture at a Powwow, hack down invasive vines in East Rock Park, explore the benefits of meditation, participate in bicycle safety training, and so much more.
